Caitlin Hynes makes the Skinny
A Gray’s School of Art graduate has been selected to participate in a special event showcasing the best artistic talent from Scotland’s art schools.
Caitlin Hynes (22) will take part in culture magazine The Skinny’s Showcase event, which will this year take the form of an exhibition for the first time.
The Printmaking student, who graduated from Gray’s earlier this month, will join three other students selected from across Scotland in the exhibition which will be hosted at the Creative Exchange from August 1 to 31, as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival.
Caitlin, who received a Highly Commended in the BP Fine Art Award and a SMART Gallery New Art Look to the North Award for her degree show at Gray’s as well as being selected for the Royal Scottish Academy’s (RSA) New Contemporaries exhibition in 2015, said: “I’m so excited to be taking part in the Showcase as it is a brilliant opportunity to take my work to a new audience and it is great to meet the students from the other art schools as well.
“I have been inspired by the concept of ‘pilgrimage’. It is important for me to collect and create objects and artefacts, records and traces of my journey, where I have been and where I am going. I value those things that are significant and meaningful, however small or ephemeral.
“My work is raw and playful and reflects an individual journey, as it happens, in the ‘now’ of this life, and in the belief that when we come together as individuals, we can create a positive and life giving energy that is greater than ourselves.”
Editor of The Skinny, Ros West, said: “Since 2008, we’ve been selecting an artist from each of the degree shows in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee to display their work in the Showcase section of our magazine in print and online.
“This year we’ve been offered the opportunity to take this selection into the real world with an exhibition as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival. We of course jumped at the chance – being able to give graduates from Scotland’s art schools a platform in an international festival of visual art is an incomparable opportunity and we are delighted to have also now expanded the selection to include Gray’s School of Art.”
Caitlin’s work will be on show at the Creative Exchange, Leith, alongside that of Fiona Beveridge, from Edinburgh College of Art, Edward Humphrey from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and Melanie Letore, from Glasgow School of Art.
The Skinny Showcase opens on Friday, August 1, and runs until the end of the month.
