RGU student wins Bluebird competition

A communication design student at Gray’s School of Art has been announced as the winner of a competition to design a new logo for Stagecoach Bluebird.

Stagecoach design 2Third year student Ondrej Culko (26) saw his design chosen from more than 100 entries submitted by designers and artists across the north-east by the board of directors at Stagecoach North Scotland.

Ondrej said: “My intention was to keep the logo as simple and smooth as possible to suggest comfort and a smooth drive. The logo will underline the strength and the highest quality of service provided by Stagecoach.”

Steve Walker, Managing Director, Stagecoach North Scotland, said: “We were overwhelmed by the number of high quality entries submitted in the competition. Ondrej’s logo stood out to us and really compliments the Stagecoach brand.”

The new logo was unveiled at Crathes Castle on Friday, January 23, by the Provost of Aberdeenshire, Jill Webster.

She said: “I was honoured to be asked to unveil the Stagecoach North Scotland’s new Bluebird logo, an emblem which has been part of Scotland’s coaching history for almost a century.

“The coach services provided by Stagecoach link the north-east’s communities together, allowing both local residents and visitors to the area to travel in a comfortable and environmentally-friendly way.

Stagecoach logos 2“I would like to congratulate the designer of the winning logo, Ondrej Culko, for his original and creative entry which I look forward to seeing both in Aberdeenshire and beyond.”

Cameron Craddock, Communication Design programme leader at Gray’s School of Art, said: “The competition has been a great opportunity for some of our students to work on a live collaborative brief and we saw an impressive range of concepts and ideas submitted.

“We are delighted that Ondrej’s design has been selected as the new identity for Stagecoach Bluebird and look forward to seeing it on buses around the north-east in the coming months.”

The competition was open to all and in addition to the status of having a design which will be prominently displayed and widely seen throughout the north and north-east of Scotland, Ondrej will receive the cash prize of £1000.

The first vehicles to carry the new Bluebird will be 12 Panther B12 coaches which started operating in October on the Service 35 route.  The re-branding programme of the new buses will begin in February followed by a roll out programme to install the new logo to the remaining coaches in the Stagecoach North Scotland fleet throughout 2015.
