Gray’s students feature in national exhibition

Two painting students at Gray’s School of Art have had their work selected for a national exhibition in Edinburgh.

The Challenge Luke VinnicombeLuke Vinnicombe (21) and Toni Harrower (24), who are both in their final year here at Gray’s, have seen their paintings featured in the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) Open exhibition, which launched last week.

Toni was also named as the winner of the £250 RSA Keith Prize, awarded for the best work by a student of any age studying Fine Art at a Scottish art school.

The RSA Open is an exhibition of works by contemporary artists from Scotland and further afield, selected for their quality by a panel of RSA academicians. It runs until February 14.

Luke, whose selected piece is called ‘The Challenge’, said: “It is a great honour to be selected for an exhibition at the RSA, as being from Edinburgh I have visited the building many times and have enjoyed some great exhibitions there.

“I have always wanted to exhibit artwork there myself, I just never imagined it would be so soon.”

Intersection Toni HarrowerHe added: “I would describe my work as being quite fictional, set in an almost dream like world. I often experiment with opposing groups of imagery, which when put together creates the narrative of the paintings. This can often provide a comical mood to the painting.”

Toni, whose piece is called ‘Intersectional’, said: “I’m shocked that I even made it through to pre-selection round and am delighted to be included in the exhibition. I wasn’t expecting to win the Keith prize at all.”

Painting course leader, Keith Grant, said: “It’s fantastic that Toni and Luke have been selected for this year’s RSA Open Exhibition, especially since they are both still undergraduates.

“Being selected for such a prestigious exhibition will be a terrific boost for the both of them as they work towards their Degree Show next June.”
