Communication Design students at Gray’s School of Art will open an exhibition at Hatch in the Academy Shopping Centre on Belmont Street on December 2nd.

The exhibition, which is open to the public, features work from across years 1, 2 & 3 of the course and includes 50 x 3D models and over 80 posters. The projects and themes vary across the year groups and includes work generated in MAKE Aberdeen; a Digital Fabrication Studio based on Belmont Street. MAKE Aberdeen is operated by the Robert Gordon University and has assisted with the production and printing of the work on display, using the latest 3D modelling and digital printing technologies.

The exhibition will be housed in Hatch – a new creative industries graduate enterprise and incubator space which has been set up by Lewis Fraser and Lewis Copland; recent graduates of the BA Hons Communication Design course. They aim to create a communal facility and studio that creatives can access during their studies, and importantly after graduation.

Following this inaugural exhibition, Hatch is scheduled to host a series of other events including the ‘No Ball Games’ Communication Design Festival which will include exhibits, workshops and guest speakers.

Iain Morrison – Lecture in Communication Design at Gray’s School of Art said

“We aim to showcase some of the work being produced by design students and engage more with the local creative industries and the wider public”.

“We hope that this initiative will highlight the significant levels of design talent within Aberdeen. Given the recent down turn in energy sector it is important the city is able to diversify and we want to encourage our graduates to remain within the city after graduation and establish themselves as part of the local creative economy”.

Businesses within the local area have also been supporting the new creative enterprise including The Academy Shopping Centre, Belmont Filmhouse, Fierce beer and Six Degrees North.

The exhibition previews Friday Dec 2nd, at Hatch – The Academy, Belmont Street from 2.00-5.00pm.
It then continues from Saturday 3rd – Wednesday 7th at 11.00am-2.00pm
